From 2010 to 2013 the historical building complex of the Berlin State Opera will be completely refurbished and repaired. At the same time, an underground link will be built to connect the Opera House to the Artistic Director’s offices.

Return to former grandeur

A major aim of the construction work – based on a design by HG Merz Architekten – is to improve workflows in the Opera, whereby the heritage-protected building has to be preserved. Measures include modernization of the technical equipment, improvements to fire prevention systems, and sealing to prevent the ingress of groundwate. In addition, extensive measures will be taken to improve acoustics in the auditorium.

Special expertise required – Drees & Sommer as a part of the bw-engineers network is undertaking project management to ensure that work is carried out to quality specifications and within budget and schedule to allow reopening on the planned date in October 2013. The experts‘ extensive experience of working with historical building fabric will be particularly valuable.
